A Year in the Life of Rurutatyana.com

Happy new year! I hope everyone has enjoyed this holiday season.

For the sake of lil personal update: This month has been a time of reflection for me. I’ve been thinking a lot about where I am, where I’m going and how I’m going to try to get there. I’ve focused on loving my mind, body and soul. Therefore, I’ve tried to only focus on things that bring positivity to me. If someone had told me that seeing the good in everything was as tiring as it is, maybe I wouldn’t have done it. But the reality is that not everything is perfect and I’ve had to really find those positive aspects. This past year I have worked incredibly hard to be where I’m and I’m very happy with that.

A year in the life

It has been a year since I started blogging! Who knew that time went by so quickly! If you’d like to get into the nitty-gritty bits of my blogging experiences, read on! I have outlined the main events of each month of 2017 and have provided links to the posts written in those months.

January – When it all began! My blog first started off as rthogan.com (I didn’t like the platform that I was working on, so I made the switch to WordPress) When I first started, I was writing about anything that came to my mind. I wrote it out in diary format and a picked a key point of my day and wrote about it. I called it The 2017 Rewind. The idea was that people would be able to go back and read through my year. This was quite the learning curve because I realised that no one wants to sit and read what I do on a daily basis. So, as you can imagine, that ended after 5 days. I was honestly just trying to write in bulk. I hadn’t realised that it should be quality over quantity.

February –  The attention I got from My Skin Care Tips post is what gave me the confidence to continue blogging. I got messages from all types of people who read and loved the post! (Major shout out to those people who sent me messages saying incredibly encouraging words that help keep this up!) I also started to concentate my content toward particular types of people which has helped me grow my platform.

March –  Food blogging! This is when I discovered my want for reviewing restaurants and cafes. This honestly did not last long because food in Toronto is expensive bud. But, now that i have got a little more experience, I plan on continuing this in 2018! I have a long list of restaurants to try, and you best believe they will be featured.

April – APRIL MAN! April was a good month. I finally got the courage to write about something that really meant something to me. I’m so proud of myself for opening up about my experience as a Kenyan immigrant in a mixed-race family. (Click Here if you haven’t read it yet)

May – Oouf, May was one of those months where I was just writing for the sake of posting. It was Exam season and it was incredibly hard to get creative. The fact that I had something to study for was always a lingering thought. But I’m glad I was still able to set aside the time to work on my blog.

June – The reality of May seeped all the way into June. I did not post at all… yikes.

July – I tried to start my first series!! The For a Pretty Penny series was created based off of the fact that food in this city is so damn pricey.  I wanted to showcase a few of the city’s hidden gems that don’t break your bank. I only managed to write about two restaurants but I definitely want to carry it on in 2018.

August – I was away for the month roughin’ it by the Georgian Bay. Gotta love summer camps!

September – After my Skin Care Tips post, people had asked for a personalised skin care routine and I provided! Septemeber was also when I started to notice that I was not posting as much as I wanted to. I tried to write a bunch of posts so I can post them every few weeks, but that did not work out.

October – A one post kinda month… I can assure you that it took me the whole month of October to write that travel post. I was not in the blogging zone what-so-ever! I would write a little bit every weekend but it took a weekend away at the cottage for me to finally finish the post.

November  – haha we don’t talk about November… November was basically October part 2.

December – A month of trying to figure out how I want my blog to look 2018. I have been writing out plans and ideas and I can’t wait for it to all become a reality.

Thank you for all the support and motivation you have given me this year. I hope you have enjoyed my journey as much as I have. I wish everyone a blessed 2018.

**Featured below are some pictures from this past year! Most of these are already on this website but others have never been posted here before.

Stay Groovy
